Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa
Son of Daśaratha and Sumitrā, twin of Lakṣmaṇa, close companion of Bharata.
Saumitri as Lakṣmaṇa, and the other as Śatrughna — so Vasiṣṭha, deeply pleased, assigned these names.
Then Sumitrā bore two sons, Lakṣmaṇa and Śatrughna — heroes skilled in all weapons, jointly possessing a half portion of Viṣṇu.
Śatrughna too — the younger brother of Lakṣmaṇa — was always dearer to Bharata than life itself, and was equally beloved by Bharata.
