Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa
The monkey king who allies with Rāma against his brother Vālin and is reinstated as king of the monkeys.
Then Sugrīva, the foremost of monkeys, golden-tawny in hue, roared;
Then, at Sugrīva's word, slaying Vālin in battle, Rāghava reinstated Sugrīva in that kingdom.
Although Rāma pledged the slaying of Vālin, Sugrīva was always doubtful about Rāghava's valor.
