Matthias
in the texts
Stromata
Chief tax-collector who promises alms and restitution to the Lord.
So Zacchaeus—but some say it was Matthias—the chief tax-collector, when he had heard the Lord deeming him worthy to come to him, said:
Who Is the Rich Man That Shall Be Saved?
A rich tax-gatherer whom Jesus hosts as a guest, cited as evidence that wealth itself is not condemned.
But indeed He Himself is a guest with Zacchaeus and Levi and Matthew, the rich men and tax-gatherers, and He does not bid them give up their money, but, imposing the just use and taking away the unjust, He proclaims:
Adversus Marcionem
Tax collector whose house receives salvation after acts of charity and restitution fulfilling the prophets' precepts.
There follows too the salvation of the house of Zacchaeus.
