Manusmṛti
The second life-stage, held to be the most excellent because it materially and ritually supports the other three āśramas.
Just as all rivers and streams find their resting place in the ocean, so do all those in the *āśramas* find their support in the householder.
And of all these, according to the ordinance of the Veda and the *Smṛti*, the householder is declared to be the most excellent, for he supports these other three.
Vīramitrodaya
The class of married householders, repeatedly distinguished from ascetics and from householders with sons for purposes of fasting rules.
This is because of the exclusion of a fast for those with a son in verses such as:
the word 'householder' (*gṛhin*) should be seen as referring to a householder other than one with a son.
> A householder without desire should always perform the succeeding Ekādaśī, / > whether Dvādaśī is present at dawn or not, O best of the twice-born!
