Atharvaveda (Paippalāda)
The married couple for whom the household oblation is performed.
I pour this oblation rich in cattle, rich in livestock, rich in horses for the husband and wife.
By the oblation, O Prajāpati, I surround this husband and wife for their flourishing and extension.
May this oblation go forth increasing the husband and wife — rich in offspring, rich in cattle, of fine heroism.
Nicomachean Ethics
The marital relationship, analyzed as an unequal friendship analogous to aristocracy, with authority divided according to fitness.
The relation of husband to wife seems to be in the nature of an aristocracy:
The friendship between husband and wife again is the same as that which prevails between rulers and subjects in an aristocracy;
But there is a different kind of friendship, which involves superiority of one party over the other, for example, the friendship between father and son, and generally between an older person and a younger, and that between husband and wife, and between any ruler and the persons ruled.
