The pre-Islamic Arab community whose marriage forms, infanticide, matronymic lineages and occasional female control of the marriage-bond furnish all the disputed data of the chapter.
The mutʻah is one kind among the kinds of marriage that were prevalent in the Jāhilīyah, and all of them negate mother-right, because in them the man is the possessor of lordship and the possessor of the marriage-bond.
The possession by some of the women of the Jāhilīyah of their own marriage-bond in marriage and divorce has been taken as a proof of the sovereignty of mother-right and that the woman is the head of the family — how strange is this conclusion, and how defective this induction!
For the existence of these conditions in the Jāhilīyah of the Arabs does not conflict with their tracing themselves to their fathers;
