Primordial, unconscious material nature (pradhāna/prakṛti), the equilibrium of the three constituents, sole cause of the manifest world and ultimate agent of all activity.
As a child [is born] from the union of woman and man, so the great principle is born from prakṛti.
For this very reason, transformation (pariṇāma)—as characterized by the definition "the real, essential becoming-otherwise of a thing"—is accepted [for prakṛti, not for puruṣa].
