Atharvaveda (Paippalāda)
Sin and Guilt, the accumulated impurities of curse, slander, deceit, and evil dream from which the purification hymn seeks release.
The seven flowing rivers — may they release us from sin.
May they release me from the guilt of a curse, and also from what pertains to Varuṇa;
From slander of kin, from evil dream, from deceit — may they release me from the noose of Varuṇa.
Rigveda
The concept of sin or guilt, addressed as an inherited or committed burden that reverence and the gods can purify or lay to rest.
May we not suffer the sin done by another;
reverence to the gods, reverence to the lord of these — even sin already done I seek to purify with reverence.
Whatever sin there may be from long ago in the two worlds, whatever offence against the gods or among mortals — that, O Ādityas, Vasus, and Rudra groups, joined together for protection, lay as burning guilt.
