The author of the treatise, a teacher and commentator who reports being appointed to lecture in several disciplines and to write commentaries on books in the sciences and conjectural arts, and who composed this abridged work in answer to a sultan's question about the soul.

this weak servant says that for a long while I had a strong desire to write a book on the soul (nafs) and the spirit, gathering into it what people have said and what has been disclosed by way of unveilings (futūḥ).

For I had seen a book on the soul (nafs) by Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī — may God have mercy on him — whose bulk exceeded twenty quires, and it had been my resolve to write a commentary and exposition upon it, so that what I wrote would be somewhat larger than it;
