Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa
One of Daśaratha's two chief officiating priests.
He had two highly esteemed officiating priests, both foremost among sages — Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva — and other counsellors as well.
Having thus honoured them in return, the king spoke these words to the brāhmaṇas, to Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva, while those same men listened.
"It shall be done" — so said those two foremost of twice-born men, Vasiṣṭha and Vāmadeva, approaching the lord of the world, pleased and filled with joy, in accordance with his spoken command.

A sage-discerner of Dharma who ate forbidden food to save his life without incurring sin.
Vamadeva, a discerner of Dharma and non-Dharma, wishing to eat dog's meat when he was in distress for the sake of protecting his life-breaths, was not tainted.
