Adab al-wazīr
The Umayyad governor Ziyād, held up as the model official who gathers diligently yet deals tenderly.
And ʻUmar ibn ʻAbd al-ʻAzīz described Ziyād and said:
Ansāb al-ʻArab al-qudamāʼ
The Companion of obscure paternity, known by his mother's name until Muʻāwiyah acknowledged him into his own lineage; his case is offered as the ordinary explanation for tribes bearing a mother's name.
And the father may be unknown through the pregnancy's arising from fornication, as happens in the Jāhilīyah and elsewhere, so that the child is born with no known father and they trace him to his mother — as befell Ziyād ibn Abīhi, the shrewd Companion, for he was known by his mother Sumayyah and was called Ziyād ibn Sumayyah;
