Bayān zaghl al-ʻilm wa-al-ṭalab
The Muslim community understood as a corporate body: the set of scholarly classes whose faults the book anatomizes, and the bearer of the standing obligation to keep the readings in mass transmission.
Know that in every class of the scholars of this community there is something blameworthy and faulty — so shun it:
and the readings are parts of the Qur'an, whose continuous mass transmission (*tawātur*) the community is obliged to maintain down the length of the centuries — indeed, the people of every region must have among them a number of men upholding them that reaches the threshold of mass transmission, failing which they all incur sin, as the exacting scholars have expressly laid down.

The general body of citizens whose labor and wealth are contrasted with the narrow interests of the capitalist class.
This every body composes the community, and if it shall consider the two first words of the protecting-duty maxim, as applicable to itself, the question only is, whether it will be made richer by each of its members employing his own capital for his own benefit, or by yielding up annually a portion of it to rich capitalists.
The capitalists, whilst they deny or obscure this fact, confide in it for the success of the protecting-duty project in conveying to their own pockets whatever it shall extort from those of the community;
