Bayān zaghl al-ʻilm wa-al-ṭalab
The generation that heard the Prophet directly, functioning in this window both as the top of every chain and as the taxonomic scheme by which the prescribed books are arranged.
He arranged his book by the musnads of the Companions and gave the chains up to them at length, and began with the hadiths of the ten who received the good tidings, then mentioned the rest of the Companions in the alphabetical order of their names, and did not observe al-Ḥumaydī's classes — though he composed his book taking guidance from his words:
And his students were such men as Abū Bakr, ʻUmar, Ibn Masʻūd, Abū Hurayrah the memorizer (*ḥāfiẓ*), Ibn ʻAbbās, and those chiefs of men whose lives were long and whose chains stood high and who set themselves up for the lofty transmission.
He arranged them by the musnads of the Companions in five classes:
al-Saʻādah fī falsafat al-akhlāq
The Prophet's Companions, whose consensus is adduced as proof.
the evidence of the Book and the Sunnah, the consensus of the Companions, and the proofs of reason and of innate disposition (fiṭrah) support it — and he adduced a hundred and five proofs;
the portion of the eye is a fair sight, and the portion of the spirit (rūḥ) is the loftiness of a companion's thought — and the portion of the spirit is the higher and the dearer.
16 — Do not be the first to show contempt for your companion, lest you be a wrongdoer.
Kitāb mīzān al-ḥaqq fī al-manṭiq
The Companions of the Prophet, invoked as a category of the most honoured Muslims who are still denied knowledge of the unseen.
And likewise everyone who believes that none knows the unseen but God judges without hesitation that man does not know the unseen — neither the scholar, nor the Companion, nor the Prophet
