Kitāb al-Safīnah al-Nūḥīyah fī al-sakīnah al-rūḥīyah
Kasb, the kalām term for a human being's own acquisition of his acts, denied of the highest spiritual degrees, which fall instead to divine election.
And this is the degree of the friends of God (awliyāʼ), and it is not attained by acquisition (kasb), in the view of one who holds it.
Risālat al-Wāridāt
Kasb, the servant's acquisition of his voluntary acts, affirmed by the creed while denying it any efficacy, and redefined in the apparatus as genuinely efficacious under God's creating — the servant being equipped with organs, senses, intellect, knowledge, will and power, and so neither independent nor inert.
And the doctrine of the people of the Sunnah among the forebears of the community is that the servant’s acquisition is efficacious in his deed, like all other causes, but by God Most High’s creating — for it is He who created for him the limbs, the sensory faculties and the intellect, who bestowed upon him knowledge, will and power, and who made the causes subservient to him;
and the servant has no efficacy in his act — contrary to the Muʻtazilah, who say that he creates his own acts, and to the Jabriyyah, who deny acquisition altogether (1), whose doctrine entails the lapsing of the obligations of the Law.
