Kitāb al-Zawrāʼ wa-al-taʻlīqāt ʻalayhi
Ḥamd, understood ontologically as the manifesting of the attributes of perfection, ranked in degrees culminating in the Muḥammadan degree.
Thus the bringing of every existent into being is praise in the verbal-noun sense (al-maʻná al-maṣdarī), standing in the place of the uttering of a speech that indicates the beautiful;
That indication has been expressed in the glorious Qurʼān as glorification (tasbīḥ) and praise (ḥamd), where He, mighty and exalted, said:
Praise (*al-ḥamd*) belongs, in respect of its own essence, to Him who is its patron by His own essence;

it strikes us as absurd that the gods should be referred to our standards, and this is what praising them amounts to, since praise, as we said, involves a reference of its object to something else.
But if praise belongs to what is relative, it is clear that the best things do not merit praise, but something greater and better:
Now it appears that a thing which we praise is always praised because it has a certain quality and stands in a certain relation to something.
