Cyropaedia
The system of sanctions and honors used to shape citizens and Cyrus, including punishment for injustice and praise for excellence.
And there are also public contests of this sort, for which prizes are offered;
and the one who has been expelled spends the rest of his life degraded and disfranchised.
And if he choose, said Cyrus, let him flog me, provided only I may give him the game.
Adab al-wazīr
Thawāb and ʻiqāb, reward and punishment, treated as a system of proportioned requital distinct from free giving and from the play of favour and aversion.
So draw to your deeds by your acts what befits them, and meet with your requital what has made it due, and make the requital of deeds proportionate to them, whether of good or of ill, such that reward and punishment are earned by them.
For if reward and punishment must be put ahead of promise and threat, then the promise was a falling short or the threat an incapacity.
Whoever, among those who show forth evil, supposes — that he will be requited with no evil has supposed a monstrous thing.
