Adversus Marcionem
The gospel attributed to Luke, treated by Tertullian as authentic and prior, and by Marcion as a source he adulterated.
Now Luke was not an apostle but an apostolic man, not a master but a disciple, certainly lesser than his master, surely as much later as the follower of a later apostle, of Paul without doubt — so that, even if Marcion had brought in his gospel under the very name of Paul, that single instrument, destitute of the patronage of predecessors, would not suffice for faith.
I say therefore that among them — and now not only among the apostolic churches, but among all that are confederated with them by the fellowship of the mystery — that gospel of Luke has stood from the beginning of its publication which we most of all defend, whereas Marcion's is to most unknown, and to none known but that it is, by the same fact, condemned.
As regards, then, the gospel of Luke for the present — inasmuch as its communion between us and Marcion is disputed about the truth — so much more ancient than Marcion is that which is according to us, that Marcion himself once believed in it, when in the first heat of faith he contributed money to the catholic Church, money soon flung out along with himself, after he revolted into his heresy from our truth.
