While he was dwelling there, Śūrpaṇakhā — a Rākṣasī who dwelt in Janasthāna and could assume any form at will — was disfigured by him.
"A certain rākṣasa named Khara, younger brother of Rāvaṇa, dwelling in Janasthāna, has been uprooting and harrying all the ascetics.
Then, disfigured as she was, she approached Khara who was stationed at Janasthāna surrounded by troops of rākṣasas — that brother of fierce energy — and fell to the ground before him like a thunderbolt falling from the sky.
