You have Wisdom, saying, But I was born before the abyss — that you may believe the abyss too was born, that is, made;

The dark abyss at the bottom of things, where the souls Christ warned are held and to which vicious separated souls descend.
« Our Lord died in the body and lived in the soul, and warned the souls that are (1) in the bottom of the abyss » (2) — for if those souls had no decisive cognition, they would not have been able to receive our Lord's warning to them.
and as for the souls that are the reverse of what we have mentioned, they are (1) the bottom of the dark abyss.

Yet by separately defining darkness, abyss, Spirit of God, waters, the relation, so distinct, of certain and distinguished elements, makes us reckon nothing confused, nor uncertain in confusion.
But the appurtenances of heaven and earth would then first have been darkness and abyss and Spirit and waters.
