Letter 142
Late Antiquity Basil of Caesarea Greek- To the Auditor of the Prefects
I gathered together all our brethren the country-bishops at the synod of the blessed martyr Eupsychius, in order to make them known to your Honour. But since you were absent, it is necessary that they be presented to your Perfection by letter. Know, then, that this brother is worthy to be trusted by your prudence, for the fear of the Lord. And whatever he may bring to your good will on behalf of the poor, deign to believe him as one who speaks the truth, and to furnish what aid you can to those who are hard pressed. You will, of course, also deign to inspect the poor-relief work of the company under his charge, and to relieve it altogether of the assessment. For this your colleague too has already agreed to do, to free from public service the small property of the poor.
