    1. To Eustathius, bishop of Himmeria

I know that bereavement is a gloomy thing and full of cares, since it brings desolation through the loss of those who lead. Hence I suppose that your reverence too, grieving over what has befallen, does not write to us, and is at the same time now caught up in greater pressing affairs, going about among the flocks of Christ because of the assaults of enemies on every side. But since the consolation of every sorrow is converse with those of like soul, deign to write to us as often as you are able; and may you yourself find rest in speaking to us, and console us by sharing with us your own words. This too we shall be eager to do, as often as circumstances permit. And do you yourself pray, and earnestly urge the whole brotherhood to entreat the Lord, that he may at last show us release from the dejection that surrounds us.
