Adab al-wazīr
Abū al-Ḥasan ʻAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥabīb al-Māwardī, chief justice and author of the work, who speaks in the first person throughout the introduction as counsellor to a vizier.
The Imām, chief justice (qāḍī al-quḍāh) Abū al-Ḥasan ʻAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥabīb al-Māwardī — may God the Exalted have mercy upon him out of His mercy — said:
the first, that they be deserved by the good or the ill that made them due;
Take every precaution, and yet there is no guard against the appointed term;
Kitāb madhāhib al-Aʻrāb wa-falāsifat al-Islām fī al-jinn
The Shāfiʻī jurist named seventh among the philosophers of Islam whose views on the jinn the book will report.
(As for *the second aim*) it is on the views of the philosophers of Islam concerning the jinn:
The imām al-Māwardī related in Aʻlām al-nubuwwah what the men of the sīrah report of the jinn's calling out concerning the Messenger of God, God bless him and grant him peace, before his mission, and that it was among the signs of his prophethood, proceeding from inspiration.
Al-Māwardī said:
Bayān zaghl al-ʻilm wa-al-ṭalab
The Shāfiʻī jurist and exegete cited as an authority for interpreting Joseph's Qurʼānic self-description as knowledge of the science of arithmetic.
[28] (1) It is as though he were letting himself forget what has been said concerning the words of God Most High, reported of Joseph, peace be upon him, “I am a trusty keeper, knowing” — that is, a keeper of tongues, knowing the science of arithmetic, as Abū al-Ḥasan al-Māwardī and others have mentioned.
