    Kitāb al-Safīnah al-Nūḥīyah fī al-sakīnah al-rūḥīyahMedieval · Arabic

Jidāl, contentious argument, characterised as possible only where no demonstration settles a matter, and identified as the purpose for which the spirit's nature was asked about.

Now disputation is carried through only in a place of disagreement upon which no conclusive demonstration stands and over which no radiant light rises, so that the contenders pull at the ends of the discourse.

    Adab al-wazīrMedieval · Arabic

Mirāʼ, disputation or wrangling, forbidden to the vizier in dealing with his king, who is to be answered by gentle clarification and, failing that, by withdrawal.

Whoever is jealous of his honour, let him leave off disputation.
