Invocation, the disciple's question, and the teacher's undertaking
Ancient Abhinavagupta SanskritPS_1
Supreme, abiding beyond [all], beginningless, deeper than the deepest, the One who has entered manifoldly into the 'caves' [of beings] — the abode of all, present in all that moves and does not move: in You alone, Śambhu / Śiva / Paramaśiva (the absolute non-dual consciousness-Lord), do I take refuge.
PS_2
Bewildered and tossed about by the wheel of suffering that runs from dwelling in the womb to the agony of death, the disciple asked the Blessed One, Ādhāra, about the paramārtha (the supreme/highest reality or goal).
PS_3
The teacher answered him [in the manner of] the ādhārakārikā (Ādiśeṣa's base-verses Abhinavagupta recast); [now] Abhinavagupta sets forth that essence, through the vision of the Śaiva scripture [Śiva's teaching].
