    1. To Eusebius, bishop of Samosata.

It is not to multiply our despondencies that we often do not spare the recital of our difficulties in our letters to your Honour, but in order both to give ourselves some consolation through our groanings—which somehow are wont, when they come, to scatter the pain that lies in the depths—and to spur on your magnanimity to a more earnest prayer for the churches. For Moses too prayed continually for the people, as is plain; but when the contest against Amalek was joined for him, he did not let down his hands from morning until evening; rather the stretching out of the holy man's hands was completed together with the end of the battle.
