    1. To the Nicopolitans.

When I see both the evil prospering and your Reverence wearied and giving out before the continuance of the outrages, I am filled with despondency. But when again I consider the great hand of God, and that he knows how to set upright those who have been broken down, and to love the just, but to crush the proud and bring down the mighty from their thrones, then, changing, I become lighter in my hopes, and I know that, through your prayers, the Lord will quickly show us calm. Only do not grow weary in praying; but of those things of which you are teachers in word, be eager, in the present season, to set before all visible examples in deed.
