Letter 283
Late Antiquity Basil of Caesarea Greek- To Eleuthera
A suitable day for the synod we hope to find after the meetings that are to be appointed by us in the mountain country; but apart from the service of the synod no other occasion for a meeting appears to us, unless indeed the Lord should arrange something beyond our hopes. You ought to judge this from your own affairs. For if so great a crowd of cares besets your nobility, who have but one household to manage, how many occupations do you suppose we have each day?
Your dream, I think, points to something more complete: that you ought to take some care for the contemplation of the soul, and to tend those eyes by which God is naturally seen. And having the comfort that comes from the divine Scriptures, you will need neither us nor anyone else in order to discern what is needful, since you possess in the Holy Spirit a counsel and guidance sufficient to lead you to what is profitable.
