Letter 78
Late Antiquity Basil of Caesarea Greek- Without address, on behalf of Elpidius.
Your good zeal on behalf of our most reverend companion Elpidius has not escaped us — how, with your customary discernment, you gave the governor an occasion for kindness. We now beg you, by this letter, to bring that favour to completion, and to remind the governor to settle the man in our native country by his own order, with nearly the whole charge of public affairs hanging upon him. Thus you will have many specious pretexts to put before the governor, on the strength of which he will of necessity command the man to remain in our country. As for how things stand here, and how valuable the man is to our affairs, you will by no means need to be told by us, since you yourself, by your own discernment, know it exactly.
