Letter 79
Late Antiquity Basil of Caesarea Greek- To Eustathius, bishop of Sebasteia.
Even before receiving your letter, I knew the labour you undergo on behalf of every soul, and especially on behalf of our lowliness, since I have been set forward in this contest. And when I received the letter from the most reverend Eleusinius, and beheld his very presence, I gave glory to the Divine for granting us such a champion and comrade-in-arms, through spiritual aid, in the struggles for true religion. Let your unsurpassable godliness know that up to now certain assaults have been made against us by the great rulers — and violent ones — the prefect and the official of the bedchamber having spoken with personal feeling on behalf of the opposing party; but that so far, by the mercy of God, we have endured every assault unshaken, He having granted us the cooperation of the Spirit and through Him strengthened our weakness.
