[Base sūtra:] The creation of beings (bhūta-sarga) in fourteen kinds.

[Verse:] Of eight varieties [is the divine creation]: the divine (daiva), the demonic (paiśāca), the rākṣasa, likewise the gandharva, the [realm] of Indra (aindra), the brāhma, the saumya, and the brāhmya—[these] eight.

[Verse:] These are the divine wombs; but the animal (tiryak) womb is fivefold, distinguished as wild beast, [domestic] animal, bird, reptile, and the stationary [i.e. plants].

[Verse:] And the human is of one kind, [ranging] from the brāhmaṇa down to the caṇḍāla. The [domestic] animals [range] from the cow down to the mouse; the birds [are those] beginning with Garuḍa,

[Verse:] down to the gnat; the wild beasts [range] from the lion down to the jackal; the serpents [range] from Śeṣa down to the water-snake; [the stationary are] mountains, earth, and grasses,

[Verse:] [these are] the stationary. [Such] is the creation of beings—this [is] the entire circle of transmigration (saṃsāra-maṇḍala).
