    1. Libanius to Basil

Tell me, Basil, do you live in Athens and not know it of yourself? For the children of Caesarea could never have heard such words. My tongue, indeed, was not accustomed to them; but, as though making its way along some precipice, struck by the novelty of your vocabulary, it said to me, its father: "Father, you did not teach me this — Homer, that man, no, nor Plato, nor Aristotle, nor Susarion, who knew all things." So spoke my tongue. But may it be yours, Basil, to praise us in such terms.
